BEAUMONT -- The California Highway Patrol is searching for a driver who was seen throwing kittens onto a freeway in Beaumont.

A motorist driving west on Interstate 10 watched another driver, in a van, toss three kittens from the passenger window around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday near Beaumont Avenue, according to CHP officer Chris Blondon.

Investigators say the witness saw the kittens land on the shoulder of the freeway, but CHP and Animal Control officers were unable to find the cats. They're hoping the animals survived the fall and ran away.

Witnesses told police the driver of the van was going about 75 to 80 miles per hour when the kittens were tossed out of the window.

Another driver also took down the van's license plate number and police are searching for the driver.

The vehicle is decribed as a gray, mid-1990s Toyota van with California license plate number 3HSJ 963.

Meow this is not right... Kitty cats are not my choice of pet, but that don't mean they deserve to be tossed from a vehicle either... I hope they catch this person and punish them accordingly... It would be nice if we could throw his/her ass out the window of a moving vehicle going 75-80 mph to show them what the kittens felt...

I definitely don't find it acceptable to say that this person should be thrown from a moving car going at 70 MPH. That is simply not right. Punishments should fit the crime and no matter what you think, you're absolutely wrong to say that this person should be pushed out of a moving vehicle. Seriously, what are you thinking? You really feel that that is the correct way to handle this kind of behavior? Pushing them from a moving vehicle going at 70 MPH? I really hope you stop and reflect a little more before saying things like this. Instead, this person should be dragged from a moving vehicle travelling at 70 MPH.

I hope next time you post, you stop and think about what you're saying.

Heh! Someone had to lighten up the horror a little bit.

Seriously, I have three cats of my own (sadly, down from 4 at the moment). I love the furry little bastards more than I like to believe. My one cat, Archimedes, has been with me for over a third of my lifetime. If anyone ever did anything to hurt him.... Well, the wouldn't find very many pieces of the offender's body.

I can see your point. We used to have 3 - now just one left, my special character who has been there with me through lots of stuff. Anyone lay a hand on her - would suffer my wrath, and I'm mostly a peaceful person.

You know that 100 sailors go out, and 50 couples come back right?

Besides, It's not gay if it happens under (or out to) sea.

Hopefully Icarus has more grace on landing than his namesake, Meggy! ;)

All of the cats I've had have pretty much had names in the same vein:

Archimedes
Freyja
Ki Lin
Belial (this one is VERY appropriately named)
Isis
Pele

I'm thinking of naming Isis' replacement Shiva. :)

God, I agree. Throw them out the car, see how they like it. Dreadspydr, how do you find these things?

Kittens (and cats in general) are resilient creatures. I hope they survived and have now escaped whatever horrible person could do that to any living creature.

Thankfully, in Washington State we have severe animal cruelty laws. This is a horrible crime and it hurts me to read it. My hope is that the offenders experience the full extent of the laws which apply.

On a personal level, I'd just love to sit down with the cruel, despicable idiot who did this and ask him/her "Why did you do that? Do you have no mercy?"

As human beings, we have to be protectors for the animals who can't speak for themselves. These cats are hardly wild predators posing some sort of a threat to the perpetrator. They are sadly, just unwanted "trash" for the moron who did this.

It wouldn't be worth the waste of your breath to ask them why they did it. Anyone who does something like that is not going to have remorse or even a good reason. They would probably just scream profanity at you and spit in your face...or babble some nonsense...

I hope they find the driver and prosecute to fullest extent possible. I would love to see the arresting officer strip the offender down to the boxers, tie the offenders hands and feet, then load 'em up in the cruiser. Drive down the freeway at 75 - 80 mph and kick the offender out of the vehicle. Maybe the offender will get a good idea how helpless and vulnerable those little kittens were. I hope his karma comes back and bites him where it'll hurt the most.

We are caretakers of the earth and everything herein. We should strive to act more responsibily with those who are smaller, more helpless than us, less fortunate than us, and with greater conscientiousness of how our actions affect those around us. We should never use our authority, size, strength, position, etc. to mistreat or beat down or oppress anyone or anything.

      Respect ALL life.

75 to 80 mph? I doubt the kittens would have survived such an ordeal: perhaps the "eyewitness" should be investigated more closely.

However, if it turns out to be real - well, honestly... words are failing me here. Public humiliation and shunning is in order. A heavy fine to be paid to an organisation that takes care of abused animals.

And perhaps a little waterboarding and a light tazering.
