Tributed to my late cousin Benjamin L Fleeharty as well as all those that died in service.

America, the land of the free,
But where arte thou brave?
Some still walk among us,
Others sent to an early grave.

They're the ones who answered,
Their nations call to serve.
The ones who protected,
More than we deserve.

They defended our rights,
Yes, every last one,
Even to speak like an idiot,
Or to own a gun.

They kept us safe at night,
And all through the day,
Combating foreign and domestic,
And kept the enemy at bay

They were our sons and daughters,
Who we've raised from birth.
Whose virtue, honor and sacrifice,
Is now lost in the Earth.

They were our brothers and sisters,
Both younger and older,
With out them in our lives,
The world is far colder.

They were our husbands and wives,
Sent to fight in the war,
Whose love and compassion,
Will be felt no more.

They were our fathers and mothers,
Who wanted to protect,
Their children and loved ones,
So pay your respects.

Pay your respects,
To the ones who were lost,
Our freedom came with price,
Their lives were the cost.

Very moving poem, Dreadspydr. Our fallen warriors deserve to be remembered as men and women from the fabric of our nation, who served and paid the ultimate price for us to continue living as Americans. That we keep the faith with our fallen warriors is absolutely essential. You have kept the faith, and I thank you most genuinely.

Deadspyder: Thank you for your beautiful and moving poem.

Many American communities lay claim as to the origin of Memorial Day. My home state of Mississippi does so as well. There is a Civil War cemetary near Columbus, Mississippi. The story goes, that during the 1870's a New York Times reporter was visiting this cemetary one May. He noticed some Ladies, the Widows and Mothers of the Confedrate dead, placing Confederate flags upon the graves. Then he noticed them going to the Yankee side of of the cemetary, where they placed American flags upon those graves.

He asked the Ladies why they placed flags upon the graves of Enemy soldiers. They replied: " because their Mothers and Wives just can't get down ths way". Apparently moved, he returned to New York and wrote an article in the NY Times re: these events.

I hope you will forgive this aside. I cannot provide historical verification of this event. The story was told to me by my Great Grandmama. This Sunday, American and Confederate flags shall be placed upon these graves, as they have been for over 140 years. I prefer to believe that those fallen soldiers and all others, remain alive in our hearts.

Thank you again for your moving and beautiful poem, Snake, US Army, Ordnance Corp, EOD (55D40), Vietnam, 1967-68

Snake, I enjoyed your story, it displays the compassion of what was lost, irregardless of side. I have no doubt that portions, if not all of the story, was actuality as your great grandmother told.

Thank you for serving Snake, and paving the way for my generation. Much was lost in Vietnam, and you have my gratitude.

Another great poem Kyle, Haven't heard from the local paper yet. With only 10 pages it takes them a while to publish. You ought be published on a regular basis.

Thank you, kind sir, for remembering our lost. My brother died in WWII, lost in the Pacific, my husband was in the cold war against the Commies standing guard 24/7 overseas in the U.S.A.F. My younger brother retired from the U.S. Navy, and my nephew was in Iran and is home for the time being.

Hail to our fallen heros as well as our living ones.

And they say we Marines don't have a soft side!

OUTSTANDING Marine----Great Poem and article Dreadpydr---

There's no doubt in my mind that you will know this as it is has been with every Marine I know from boot to the guard shack in the sky.

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

Even though it is about Marines---it also applies to all branches.
